Pacific Disability Forum, together with the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation are currently onto the third phase of a project in Fiji that specifically addresses primary prevention on violence for women and girls with disabilities. PDF in its journey has established mutual partnerships and has been working in collaboration with SPC/RRRT and FIJI Women Crisis Centre.

Paralympics voice needed

The Fiji Paralympic Association will meet soon to review their constitution to allow athletes to have a say in the running of their organisation.

This was revealed by their president Freddy Fatiaki.

Fatiaki, coach to 2012 Paralympic Games gold medallist, Iliesa Delana, said for many years athletes had been backbenchers in their own organisation.

Rehab centre plans for homeless

 

The Inter-Agency Taskforce on Beggars is working with non-government and faith-based organisations in Fiji to build a rehabilitation facility for the homeless and mentally challenged street beggars.


The Permanent Secretary for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Josefa Koroivueta, said the recent profiling exercise compiled information on 40 street beggars in Suva.

Ban appoints former vice-president of Ecuador as envoy on disability, accessibility

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the 19 December, 2013 has announced the appointment of Lenín Voltaire Moreno Garces of Ecuador as his Special Envoy on Disability and Accessibility.

In his new post, Mr. Moreno will help promote the rights of people with disabilities, who number more than one billion, and also advocate on behalf of accessibility for all people.

On International Day of People with Disability, Senator Brett Mason today announced that the Australian Government will develop a new strategy to ensure that people with disability play an active and central role in Australia’s aid program beyond 2015.


Senator Mason made the announcement during the International Day of People with Disability event at Parliament House today.

Women’s unpaid work in the home is a ‘major human rights issue,’ says UN expert

 
NEW YORK, 25 OCTOBER 2013 (UN NEWS CENTRE) --- Cooking, cleaning and caring for children and the elderly should be a social and collective responsibility, rather than fall entirely on women’s shoulders, a United Nations independent expert has said, warning that unpaid care that is not shared ingrains poverty and social exclusion for women.
 
“I call on States to recognize unpaid care work as a major human rights issue,” UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty, Magdalena Sepúlveda, told the UN General Assembly’s main social, humanitarian and cultural body (Third Committee) in New York.
