Fifth Pacific Regional Conference on Disabilities

The Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) in partnership with Nuanua O’LE Alofa (NOLA) the national disable persons organisation (DPO) in Samoa and funding from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is hosting the Fifth Pacific Regional Conference on Disability (PRCD) at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel in Apia, Samoa from the 20 to 24 February 2017. The biennial conference is a platform to dialogue and, discuss issues pertaining to building a more inclusive and equitable Pacific for all persons with disabilities.

PDF signs TOR on Elections Disability Access Working Group (EDAWG)

The Pacific Disability Forum in partnership with disable peoples organisations in Fiji signed a Terms of Reference (TOR) with the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) and the Fiji National Council of Disabled Persons (FNCDP). The TOR signed on 31 August 2016 will be a guiding documents that will assist the Fiji Election Disability Access Working Group (EDAWG) in ensuring that Fiji’s election systems, materials and venues are accessible for all persons with disabilities in Fiji.

PDF to roll out EVAW toolkit

The Pacific Disability Forum in partnership with the UN Women Sub Regional Office in the Pacific will roll out in Samoa and Kiribati the Eliminating Violence Against Women (EVAW) Toolkit which was piloted in Fiji in 2015. The EVAW roll out project which started in December of 2016 is funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for a period of one year.

Research to promote accessible ICT for persons with disabilities in the Pacific

The Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) research titled “Accessible ICT for Persons with Disabilities in the Pacific: A case for Cook Islands, Fiji, PNG and the Republic of the Marshall  Islands” aims to promote accessible ICT in the Pacific and establish a baseline data of ICT usage by persons with disabilities in Cook Islands, Fiji, Marshall Islands and PNG.

Workshop on disability statistics

Pacific Disability Forum CEO Mr. Setareki Macanawai and Research and Development Officer Ms. Laisa Vereti participated in an Implementation Workshop on Disability Statistics from 13-15 July 2016 in Nadi, Fiji with the support of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Pacific Community. This regional training was attended mainly by heads of Statistics Departments from countries in the region. This training was organised in response to a need in the region for additional technical support for implementing and analysing the Washington Group tools and data in upcoming national censuses.

Pacific leaders’ adopts regional framework on disability

The Pacific Framework on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PFRPD) was adopted at the 47th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) in September 2016. This commitment from our leaders indicates their will to build a Pacific that is inclusive and equitable for all persons with disabilities. The Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) welcomes the decisions made by our leaders and acknowledges the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) support and role in making this happen.

PDF signs MOU with WWF Pacific

The Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Wide Fund for Nature Pacific (WWF-Pacific) on 4 July 2016 in Suva, Fiji. The MOU aims to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities in their homes and community halls which are used as evacuation centers during disasters.

Making a difference in the life of women with disabilities

The Cook Islands Women and Girls with Disabilities Organisation (CIWGDO) in partnership with the CITTI ran a ‘Sew Simple Programme’ for women with disabilities in the Cook Islands. The programme which ran for 9 weeks supported and builds the capacity of women with disabilities participating to sew scarfs, skirts, dress, tops, shorts and other types of garments that will enable them to earn sustainable income. While the programme focuses on building technical skills  for these women with disabilities, it also teaches them to live independently by supporting them to develop personal plans for their lives and  safe use of the public transportation.

DPO impacting the life of persons with disabilities in the Pacific

Touai is a totally blind men and an active advocator of the rights of persons with disabilities in Kiribati. He is a member of Te Toa Matoa (TTM) the national disable persons organisation in Kiribati and a member of TTM’s in-country resource team that take lead in advocating for disability inclusive development and creating awareness on the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Pacific Women with Disabilities at the AWID Forum in Brazil

The Pacific Disability Forum in partnership with the Disability Rights Fund (DRF) and Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) send a delegation of six Pacific women with disabilities with four personal assistants to attend the 13th AWID Forum 2016 in Bahia, Salvador, Brazil.
