WEEKLY UPDATE

Greetings from the Pacific Disability Forum (PDF).

The ratification and implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is crucial in ensuring the protection, promotion and enjoyment of all human rights for all persons with disabilities. In the Pacific, eight Island Countries have ratified the CRPD while five have signed but yet to ratify, however, its implementation is very slow in coming. The incorporation of the CRPD into in-country plans, policies, legislations, and frameworks, and, the monitoring of its implementation are critical for Pacific Island Countries, in guaranteeing the inclusion and effective participation of persons with disabilities on equal basis with others.

It is widely reported, in particular by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN ISDR), that situations of disaster have the largest impact on the poorest and most marginalised people. In relation to Fiji, we cannot ignore the fact that within this group are persons with disabilities who make up 15% of the total population, according to the World Disability Report[1].
