Over 660 persons with disabilities in Fiji have been registered and are recipients of the Parametric Insurance and Climate Change Disaster Risk Finance product.
This follows an extensive scoping and OnBoarding exercise carried out by the Pacific Disability Forum and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in Fiji.
This is the first of its kind in the region where persons with disabilities are being assisted via an insurance Product and this was made possible through the UN Community Development Fund (UNCDF) and the Insurance companies in Fiji.
An intensive weeklong scoping and registering exercise was carried out simultaneously in the Northern Division, Western as well as Central Division prior to the start of the cyclone season last year. Those identified were then OnBoarded and have been conformed as recipients of the product through Sun Insurance and Fiji Care.
The package will see persons with disabilities being assisted only if their houses are affected by rain or wind on a pre-defined index. The Payout is applicable on the occurrence of either wind or rainfall and also if both wind and rainfall are met or exceeded and only applies to persons with disabilities over the age of 18.
This Parametric Insurance will also be rolled out to Tonga and Vanuatu.
